About Phranc
Phranc is an internationally acclaimed and award-winning artist and performer. Her music, paintings and sculptures combine humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic to interrogate traditional gender perspectives and champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle, survival and style of the queer individual. As a teenager she attended The Feminist Studio Workshop at The Woman’s Building where she focused on songwriting and silk screening. In the late 1970s she was a member of bands Nervous Gender, Catholic Discipline and Castration Squad in the Los Angeles punk scene. Her current project, Phranc: The Butch Closet, is a memoir in the form of a multidisciplinary art installation that spans forty years of her life as a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer, gender nonconforming visual artist and performer.
